At Carrickfergus Grammar School we pride ourselves on having a broad range of sports for students to participate in both in curricular classes and after school.

From Years 8-12, timetabled PE classes involve learning the skills, rules and tactics needed to get involved in sports ranging from Rugby, Hockey, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball and Football to Gymnastics, Dance, Health & Fitness and Orienteering. A number of different clubs and societies exist after school allowing students the opportunity to further develop their skills and interests. Examples include Rugby & Hockey, Football, Netball, Tennis, Athletics, Running Club, Table-tennis club and Strength & Conditioning. It is the aim of all staff working in and with the PE department to foster a positive attitude towards the adoption of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle.

Students can also get involved in other various other Sporting activities such as Golf, Strength and Conditioning and Cross Country Running.

Golf is proving to be a popular after school activity. Students are entered in Winter League competitions as well as the annual NEBSSA event held at Carrickfergus & Portstewart Golf Clubs. These competitions are open to all those holding an official handicap.

Strength and Conditioning plays a vital role in the physical development of many of our performers. The rugby squads make regular use of the Benjamin Robinson Fitness Suite to improve strength and power on the pitch. We also have regular contact sessions with Strength & Conditioning coaches from Ulster Rugby who lead lunchtime and after school sessions. The strength and conditioning facility is also used by GCSE and A Level PE classes to consolidate learning in the classroom.

Cross country and distance runners have the opportunity to work on their endurance at Running club. Runners are given the opportunity to compete in the NEBSSA, Districts and Ulster Cross Country Championships.
